Every day, we do our best to be kind to one another. But sometimes, when we’re a bit grumpy or stressed, we take out our frustration on friends, family, or even strangers. Sometimes we don’t get involved, even though we know deep down we should. And sometimes we’re on the receiving end of that anger, and we see how much it hurts. That’s why, in 1988 after a life-altering event, Lorraine Jara founded Be Kind to Humankind Week, which takes place every Aug. 25 to Aug. 31. This is a week to be active, not just passive, in our quest to be kind. It’s a time to stop and breathe when we’re grumpy so we can continue to treat others with kindness even though we may not be feeling very kind.
Wednesday, Aug. 25 – Willing to Lend a Hand Wednesday
- Volunteer at the library, animal shelter, or another local organization.
- Offer to help a neighbor or friend with a task.
- Help clean other areas of the house besides your room.
Thursday, Aug. 26 – Thoughtful Thursday
- Make a kindness card and give it to a friend or family member, letting them know how much you love and appreciate them.
- Hold the door for someone.
- Give a stranger a compliment.
Friday, Aug. 27 – Forgive Your Foe Friday
- Take a deep breath instead of reacting when angered.
- Don’t hold a grudge. Try to think of why this person may be acting the way they are; chances are it has nothing to do with you!
- Most importantly, forgive yourself! Mistakes happen.
Saturday, Aug. 28 – Speak Kind Words Saturday
- Stop and think before you speak – words can be powerful.
- Consider your tone when speaking; sometimes it’s the way we say it, not what we say.
- Meditate and speak kind words to yourself. You are incredible!
Sunday, Aug. 29 – Sacrifice Our Wants for Others’ Needs Sunday
- Instead of spending money on a toy or new outfit, donate it to your favorite charity.
- Invite a friend or family member over who you don’t see very often and cook them dinner.
- Let another family member choose what to watch tonight. You might enjoy their selection more than you think!
Monday, Aug. 30 – Motorist Consideration Monday
- Don’t drive angry!
- If you’re not driving, be a good passenger. Be respectful and don’t distract the driver.
- Be a good pedestrian. Don’t jaywalk and make sure to look both ways before crossing.
Tuesday, Aug. 31 – Touch a Heart Tuesday
- Be a good listener. Don’t offer advice or speak about your own experiences, just let someone know you are there for them.
- Gather some wildflowers for a family member or friend.
- Randomly text all your friends one thing you love about them.
