July 17th marks Disneyland’s 61st birthday. From Walt Disney’s initial idea for an amusement park in the early 1950s to today, Disneyland has attracted millions of people each year. During opening day in 1955, the park couldn’t even accommodate the number of visitors who showed up, running out of concessions and nearly breaking one of the attractions.

The original park covered 160 acres of what used to be orange groves in Anaheim, California, and cost $17 million to build. Over the years, there have been countless changes to the original design, and the park now receives more than 14 million visitors a year.

Walt Disney started plans for a second and larger amusement park and resort in Orlando, Florida, in 1965. Unfortunately, he passed away only a year later and never saw this dream realized. In October of 1971, Walt Disney World opened in his honor. Since then, Disney parks in Tokyo, Paris, and Hong Kong have been created. With a fan base that covers the globe, there's almost no limit to Disney's reach. Check out some of your favorites from our collection!
