New Jersey is a state rich in talented authors and many of them write about their hometowns. Here are some of our fave Jersey authors…

Looking for a laugh while solving a mystery? Fan favorite and New Jersey native, Janet Evanovich started her career writing romance novels before she launched the hugely popular Stephanie Plum mystery series which is set in Trenton.  All of her books are engaging and full of quirky characters.

David Rosenfelt, another New Jersey native, has 27 dogs and is the founder of the Tara Foundation, a dog rescue organization. In addition to several thrillers, he has written a popular mystery series starring protagonist Andy Carpenter, defense lawyer and of course, dog lover.

Harlan Coben, a native of Newark, has written over 30 thrillers and the Myron Bolitar series. Myron Bolitar is a retired-NBA player/sports agent who can’t help solving problems for his clients.  Several of Coben’s books have been adapted for the small screen, including The Stranger and Tell No One

While George R.R. Martin, from Bayonne, is best known for his epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, he has written a number of other science fiction and fantasy works, including graphic novels, and even a book for children. His works may not be cozy, but are a wonderful and entertaining distraction.

Though born in New York, award winner Joyce Carol Oates settled down in Princeton and has written over 75 literary novels, plays, and non-fiction books. Another writer, Young Adult fiction author David Levithan’s books are popular with all ages.  His works are humorous with a touch of reality and three titles have been adapted for film, including the famous Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Mount Holly’s own Barbara Park created the wonderful and spunky Junie B. Jones for early grade readers.  First published in 1981, Junie is an outrageously funny kindergartener who has many, many adventures. You can’t go wrong sharing a Junie B. Jones book and activity with a little one.

Kid favorite author Dan Gutman, who was raised in Newark, created the super popular series: My Weird School, Baseball Card Adventures, and The Genius Files. Combine reading these humorous books with these activities for a great afternoon.
