We fell in love with Willowdean Dickson’s confidence in Julie Murphy’s Dumplin’ and followed Millie Michalchuk and Callie Reyes’ rivalry turned friendship in Puddin’. Now it’s time to read Murphy’s newest creation: Pumpkin. Pumpkin follows Waylon Russel Brewer, a fat, openly gay teen who can’t wait to get out of his small West Texas town of Clover City so he can finally live his Julie-the-hills-are-alive-with-the-sound-of-music-Andrews truth.
After Walyon gets dumped and plans to move to Austin after high school with his twin sister start to fall through, he creates an audition tape for his favorite TV drag show, Fiercest of Them All.
When the tape accidentally gets shared with the entire school, Walyon gets nominated for prom queen as a joke. He decides the best reaction is to follow through and run, leaving high school with a glittery bang. Along the way, Waylon discovers there’s more to running for prom court than campaign posters and plastic crowns, but with the help of some fellow queens, he might learn that sometimes it’s best to live in the moment.
