From website: The Porch Club of Riverton is a member of the NJ State Federation of Women’s Clubs. Founded in 1890, it is now one of the oldest in New Jersey. Eight young women originally met on porches as a reading circle each week. They were soon joined by others and in 1895 they formally organized. Through the Porch Club, Burlington County’s first Kindergarten in a public school was opened and the first woman was elected to a Board of Education. In October 1900, the State Congress of Mothers (now known as the PTA) was formed through their efforts in Riverton. The Porch Club of Riverton continues to be a “center of thought and action for women”, a meeting place for women of all ages, and it supports numerous charities and community projects. The Porch Club is a registered non-profit organization.
