August 10 is S’mores Day!  A holiday with unknown origins, it’s a day to celebrate the most popular camping treat of all time. The earliest mentions of s’mores is in the 1920’s, in a cookbook published by Campfire Marshmallow.  The recipe was then called a “Graham Cracker Sandwich”, and stated that the treat was already popular with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. In 1927, a recipe for “Some More” was published in Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.  In the 1930’s, the recipe for s’mores was being included in cookbooks aimed at summer camps, with Betty Crocker even publishing their own recipe in 1956.

While it has had a few names over the years, the basic recipe has never changed.  Two graham crackers, a piece of milk chocolate and a toasted marshmallow are all you will need to make this classic treat.  And even though you can switch up the cookies or add a different type of chocolate (like peanut butter cups!) nothing will ever beat the original flavor.

So what’s the best way to celebrate S’mores Day?  By making s’mores!  But if you can’t get out to campfire, here is a recipe for an easy no bake treat that brings in all the flavor with no bugs or risk of burns!

S’mores Bark:

  • 2 ½ cups Golden Grahams cereal
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • 1 bag milk chocolate chips
  • ½ tablespoon coconut oil
  1. On a wax paper covered cookie tray, evenly spread out 2 cups of cereal and the marshmallows.
  2. In a large microwave safe bowl, add the chocolate chips and coconut oil.  Microwave for 30 seconds, then take out and stir.  Put bowl back in microwave for another 30 seconds, then take out and stir.  Repeat until chocolate is completely melted.
  3. Drizzle the melted chocolate over the cereal and marshmallow mixture.  Using a spatula, carefully mix everything together, then spread it out into an even layer on the cookie sheet.  Take the ½ cup of cereal and crush it and sprinkle it over the chocolate.
  4. Place in the refrigerator to set.  Once it has, break into smaller pieces, then enjoy!
